CHAPTER 12
THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND – THE CONNECTING LINK

The Eleventh Step toward Riches

“You are now engaged in trying to help shut off the flow of negative impulses, and to aid in voluntarily influencing your subconscious mind, through positive impulses of DESIRE. When you achieve this, you will possess the key which unlocks the door to your subconscious mind. Moreover, you will control that door so completely, that no undesirable thought may influence your subconscious mind.” ~ Napoleon Hill, T&GR Chapter 12

“Therefore I say unto you, whatever things you desire, when you pray, believe that you will receive them, and you shall have them.” – Mark 11:24

Hill starts off this chapter by telling us that we cannot entirely control our subconscious minds, but we can voluntarily hand over to it any plan, desire, or purpose which you wish transformed into concrete form. So we have the keys to this incredibly complex machine called the human mind. The question is are we going to drive it ourselves, or just put it in gear, take our hands off the wheel and let it go where it may?

Participating in the 30 Day Mental Cleanse will definitely help you to “shut off the flow of negative impulses” and to voluntarily influence your mind in a positive way. Granted you could leave the TV or the radio on, continue to read the newspapers, watch the stock market, etc. And thus allow your subconscious mind to be influenced by Constantly Negative News (CNN), Snoop Dog, Snooki, American Idiot, oops I mean, Idol, the editorial pages, or the latest prediction of financial calamity from Wall Street or you can develop your subconscious mind so that you can make your own news, create your own economy, and win at your own game (of life). When I think about all of the time, concentration and emotional energy I have invested raging against the politicos in Washington, or rooting for my favorite sports teams, or riding the ups and downs of the Wall Street ticket tape, it infuriates me. As if I had any control in any of it; as if any of it has a direct impact on me in any way. There were definitely better uses for my time and energy.

But there is something that I can control that does have a direct impact on me and my future. For the most part, I can control the noise around me, or shut it out all together. I can choose what I read, what I listen to, who I listen to, who I spend my time with and what I spend my time doing. Most importantly, I can choose what I say to myself and how often I say it and thus voluntarily influence my subconscious mind, voluntarily influence what I BELIEVE, and subsequently what I DO. Self-talk is the “key which unlocks the door to your subconscious mind.” And my subconscious mind is the gateway to the Infinite Intelligence. And when I submit my requests to Him in total BELIEF and FAITH, He says I can have whatever I DESIRE.

There is a little more to it than that. Hill says that all 13 principles of “Think and Grow Rich” are the ‘stimuli with which you acquire the ability to reach and influence your subconscious mind’. We study and mastermind all 13 of them here in the 30 Day Mental Cleanse. Then we support and encourage each other to master the principles therein, and thus master our selves. If you haven’t joined us, I encourage you to do so. I the encourage you to decide where you want to go, and then start your engine, put both hands firmly on the wheel and steer towards your destination.

CHAPTER 10 – POWER OF THE MASTER MIND
THE DRIVING FORCE

The Ninth Step toward Riches

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them.” ~ Matthew 18:20

I guess you could say that the Master Mind group creates what would be called in this modern times as “synergy”. Synergy is defined as the interaction of multiple elements in a system to produce an effect different from or greater than the sum of their individual effects. You no doubt have heard the expression two heads are greater than one. Hill alluded to something expressed by the Master Teacher that when we put two or more heads together in a spirit of harmony that Infinite Intelligence gets involved as well.

Hill also briefly touches on the power of associations. You also may have heard this saying: “You will never rise above the level of the people you associate with”. Les Brown says that “if you hang around with 9 broke people, I guarantee you will be the 10th.”

Hill talks about the importance of, and the care needed in, the selection of our mastermind group. I believe that we have a number of mastermind groups in our lives. They can consist of our families, our work groups or people on the job with us, classmates, and that group of friends we hang out with in our free time. I have heard Michael Dlouhy suggest that we not hang around those who puke on us with their negativity, and who I consider to be the Dream Stealers. Michael also says that we shouldn’t take advice from people who HAVEN’T done what we want to do.

Mentoring for Free meets all of the criteria that Hill laid out for the selection of our Mastermind Group. There is a “spirit of harmony and a power of thought” found here that is rare in our world today. There is no competition here, rather on the contrary everyone is rowing together towards the same destination, encouraging each other all along the way. It is also my belief that when we get together that Infinite Intelligence is in our midst. And like Hill says, when that happens, “the increased energy created through that alliance becomes available to every individual brain in the group.” And we all grow just that much more, together.

CHAPTER 5
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, PERSONAL EXPERIENCES OR OBSERVATIONS

The Fourth Step toward Riches

“Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” ~ Jim Rohn

Much was made in this chapter of men without formal educations, like Henry Ford and Thomas Edison, who went on to fame and fortune by applying the principle of specialized knowledge. I personally believe in a formal education, and encourage my children to get one. I also believe in continuing education. I just recently acquired my Master’s degree about three years ago, after spending almost twenty years in pursuit of my bachelor’s degree. Who says you can’t cram 4 years of education into 20?

That said, I am a strong believer in self-education, in learning what one wants and needs to learn to achieve specific goals, or put another way, acquiring specialized knowledge. This is especially true after embarking on this network marketing journey, where I have so much to un-learn before learning the skills I need for success in this network marketing industry.

So just what specialized knowledge does this industry require? Do you need to become an expert on your particular business, be it health and nutrition, weight loss, mobile applications, travel, legal services, etc.? The company’s leadership, products and compensation plans? Or Network Marketing in general? Yes I admit it would be helpful to know how to effectively market to your network or circle of influence. And if you wanted to expand that circle then you might need to learn sales and advertising skills, internet marketing, blogging, Search Engine Optimization, mobile marketing, and the list goes on.

According to Mentoring for Free founder Michael Dlouhy, if you are in the network marketing industry then your business is People. And that instead of trying to learn and employ sales skills, you should focus on building relationship skills. His mentor, Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter, is in agreement. Big Al says that there are only three reasons why anyone would join your business and they have nothing to do with the company, product or compensation plan. Those three reasons are:
1) They know you.
2) They like you.
3) They trust you.
I think it is safe to assume that you need to have a relationship with someone in order to develop know, like, and trust.

So it stands to reason that if our business is people, then we need to get smart about people, not as huge group, but as individuals. One of the primary relationship skills that we learn here at Mentoring for Free is called our Colors Training where we learn how distinguish between the 4 basic personality types and then how to tailor our presentations to those meet their needs, that is we learn to discipline ourselves to speak the language of the person we are talking to.

The skill required to distinguish the personality types is one that we are all born with, but which I am guilty of not using very much until lately. That is the skill of listening. People will tell you who they are, what kind of a person they are and what they want or need if you will just listen. So many of us in this industry start out trying to memorize scripts, totally focused on what we need to say to make a sale. One mistake we often make is only listening for ways that we can make that person fit into a particular category for our goods or services. Sometimes the person we are talking to is trying to tell us everything we need to know to make a sale to him, but we can’t wait for him to shut up so that we can pounce and shove him into the category that meets our needs (to make a sale) instead of his need.

If we slow down and listen carefully, seeking a deep understanding of what that person’s needs are then we can more effectively address their needs. There is an old saying that goes, people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Zig Ziglar famously said something to the effect that if you help enough people get what they want, you will get everything that you want. Well you will never know what they want if you don’t listen to them. Don’t worry about what you are going to say. Michael calls this being in the NOW. Focusing on the person, in that moment, and forgetting your own agenda. Besides if you rush and don’t find out about all of a person’s needs, you can leave money on the table by only meeting a portion of the person’s needs.

I am not saying that it’s not important to know about your company and all of that. But I am reminded of Andrew Carnegie in this chapter not knowing much at all about the production of steel, but he had a mastermind group who did have that knowledge. And I remember Henry Ford’s desk with the electric buttons that he could use to summon a specific person to get the knowledge he required to make a decision. Sometimes it is just as good to know where to get information or where to refer a person to. I am just saying, keep the main thing the main thing. If you really want to go places in this business, then you gotta learn about people and how to help them get what THEY want.

CHAPTER 4
AUTO-SUGGESTION
THE MEDIUM FOR INFLUENCING THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND
The Third Step toward Riches

“You are now reading the chapter which represents the keystone to the arch of this philosophy. The instructions contained in this chapter must be understood and APPLIED WITH PERSISTENCE…The actual performance of transmuting DESIRE into money, involves the use of auto-suggestion as an agency by which one may reach, and influence, the subconscious mind. The other principles are simply tools with which to apply auto-suggestion.”

“Plain, unemotional words do not influence the subconscious mind. You will get no appreciable results until you learn to reach your subconscious mind with thoughts, or spoken words which have been well emotionalized with BELIEF.”

~ Napoleon Hill, “Think and Grow Rich”, Chapter 4

The importance of this chapter and the information therein cannot be overstated. Napoleon Hill says this chapter is the keystone, or the Master Key, rather to the whole philosophy. He goes on to say that the other 12 principles taught in this book are only tools needed to apply this principle. So it seems to me that auto-suggestion, self-suggestion, or self-talk should be the area of our primary focus.

Hill says auto-suggestion is the way we can voluntarily influence our subconscious minds. In other words, you can tell yourself who you want to be, how you want to behave, what you want, and your subconscious mind will go to work to make your thoughts a reality in the physical world. It is also the only means we have to gain the cooperation of Infinite Intelligence. I know that some will say, no you pray in order to do that, but I will submit to you that auto-suggestion is a form of prayer.

Because in order for auto-suggestion to work, as the quote above states, what we say has to be ‘well emotionalized with BELIEF”. Some would call that FAITH. The Bible says that ‘without faith, it is impossible to please God.’ Now I don’t want to get into any kind of religious debate. I just want to stress how important it is to practice the principle of auto-suggestion and how important it is to believe in the principle of auto-suggestion. That not only is it important for you to say your self-talk, it is important that it be said with conviction in a state of complete, unwavering faith.

Hill also suggests that repetition is key, that the subconscious mind has to be told repeatedly your desires before it will act on them. And you must speak those desires aloud, so that you can actually hear them. Michael Dlouhy suggests repeating your self-talk at least several hundred times a day, preferably a lot more. ‘Where your focus goes, energy flows.’

So what should you say? Well, the better question is what do you desperately desire? Charles Haanel in the course, “The Master Key System”, says that most of what we want and need can be summed up in the following self-talk. “I am whole, perfect, strong, powerful, loving, harmonious, and happy”. Note the use of “I am”, not I will, or I want to be, but I am. You could always add other ‘happy words’ or desirable traits to that list. As a network marketer I like to use the following self-talk myself. “I am having fun, attracting and sponsoring coach-able leaders into my business, easily and consistently, through education and teamwork.” So not only am I claiming desirable results in my business but that I am having fun doing it, which takes the dread out of prospecting and picking up the phone. I also like, “I am blessed and highly favored. I am a child of the King.” Really, it is whatever works for you. What do you want? What do you want your subconscious mind to go to work on?

The important thing is to do your self-talk, and do it consistently, with conviction, faith, and with as many of the positive emotions that you can wrap your self-talk in. Consistently means every day!

FAITH: VISUALIZATION OF, AND BELIEF IN ATTAINMENT OF DESIRE
The Second Step toward Riches

“FAITH is the ETERNAL ELIXIR which gives life, power, and action to the impulse of thought!”

“FAITH is a state of mind which may be induced, or created, by affirmation or repeated instructions to the subconscious mind, through the principle of autosuggestion”

“Your BELIEF, or FAITH, is the element which determines the action of your subconscious mind.”

“You can’t have a part-time FAITH and expect a full-time victory.” ~ Troy Evans

Faith is such of an important part of everything you do and is the major determinant of where you will end up in life. You could say that Desire determines why we would do something, but faith determines what we do. To break it down, your beliefs determine your actions and your actions determines your results, hence the stronger your beliefs (faith), the stronger your actions and the better your results.

Nick Sarnicola defines belief as a ‘feeling of absolute certainty’. It’s a feeling of without a doubt. It’s not without a doubt or absolute certainty, but a feeling. For example if you take a Catholic Priest, a Muslim Imam and a Buddhist Monk you will have three completely different view points on what constitutes spiritual enlightenment. But which one is right? I submit to you that they all are, at least as far as each holy man is concerned, because they each have a feeling of absolute certainty about their doctrines. You
could present all kinds of documentation, statistics, scientific studies, etc. and not shake their faith in the slightest. The same would be true for staunch political rivals and others of ideological differences.

So how to we come about these beliefs? Napoleon Hill tells us the we can develop the state of mind called faith voluntarily, but that is not how it happens with most of us. Our beliefs consist of groupings of related thoughts or references, often picked up from our parents, relatives, and environment. Michael Dlouhy calls it our programming. One good example he uses is the myth that swimming immediately after eating would cause one to cramp up. I believed that right up until I heard Michael discuss it although I have never, ever in 50+ years seen or heard of it happening to anyone. Most religious people end up worshiping in the religion of their childhood as that doctrine is reinforced in their impressionable minds week after week. Most believe it and never question it. I am one of those people myself.

So what kind of programming do you have when it comes to money or the subject of entrepreneurship? I bet you can finish each of these sentences:

“Money is the root of all _______.” “Money doesn’t grow on ______.”

“When you go to school you have to get good ______, so that you can get into a good ________. Once you are in college you will need to get good ______, so that when you graduate you can get a good ____ which will take care of you for the rest of your ____.”

“You need to find a secure and stable _____.”

Or about networking marketing:
“Oh, you’re doing one of those things? Those things don’t _____.”

So even though a lot of us now believe in entrepreneurship, those old programs are still in our system. But as I mentioned before, Hill says that we can develop faith in any area voluntarily. Imagine if you will a glass full of dirty, filthy water. What would happen if we set it under a tap and just continued minute after minute to pour clean water into that gas? Eventually we would flush out all of the dirty water and be left with a glass of clean, clear water. That’s what the Mental Cleanse is all about.

Hill says, “Repetition of affirmation of orders to your subconscious mind is the only known method of voluntary development of the emotion of faith.” And he goes on to say that a man will believe whatever he repeatedly tells himself, even if it is a lie. You can literally reprogram your subconscious mind to believe whatever you want to believe. Why not believe in your greatness?

Hill also tells us that we need to believe in ourselves and believe in the Infinite Intelligence. I will go a step farther and say that we also need to believe in our business/industry and we need to believe in the people we introduce into our business. I believe the reason that most people don’t make it in this industry is that they either don’t believe in the business (or product/industry) or they don’t believe that THEY CAN DO the business. It’s dang near impossible to communicate confidence in your business to a prospect if you do not have it yourself. But when you are confident, that confidence radiates out in everything you do. If your product doesn’t know anything else, he or she will know that you are absolutely certain about what you are doing.

Michael Dlouhy always says that he will believe in us until we believe in ourselves. I have to admit that knowing Michael believes in me makes me more confident in what I’m doing. But you say, how can he do that when he doesn’t know about our circumstances, our problems, or weaknesses? Our, our…oh STOP IT. Michael knows that he is human and that if he can do it, we can do it too. He knows people with problems ten times worse than ours who made it. He knows that our Creator has given us everything we need to succeed.

He knows that if you follow Napoleon Hill’s advice and start telling yourself repeatedly that you can do this, that you are good enough, that this business will work for you, that you have what it takes, that you have God’s favor and blessing, etc., that you will soon be ten feet tall and bullet-proof. He knows that nothing will be able to stop you if you stick by the fire long enough you will have FAITH in yourself, FAITH in God, FAITH in your business, and FAITH in your people. Yes, you need to believe in them until they can
believe in themselves. If you, their sponsor, don’t think they can do it, why should they believe any different? Your believing in them might be just the inspiration they need to try it one more time. A little faith goes a long way.
